Cubic Yard Calculator
Turn any length, width and height into cubic yards. It works for soil, mulch, gravel, concrete, sand and more, and it shows cubic feet, cubic meters, gallons and liters as well.
Results are estimates. Soil, stone and mulch settle, weigh differently and vary by supplier. Confirm quantities and local requirements before ordering.
How to calculate it
Convert all three measurements to feet, multiply them to get cubic feet, then divide by 27, because there are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard (3 × 3 × 3).
Formula: cubic yards = length (ft) × width (ft) × height (ft) ÷ 27.
If your measurements are in inches, divide each by 12 first. If they are in yards, you can multiply directly. This calculator handles the unit conversion for you.
Worked example
A 10 ft × 10 ft area filled 6 inches deep:
| Cubic yards | 1.852 yd³ |
|---|---|
| Cubic feet | 50 ft³ |
| Cubic meters | 1.416 m³ |
| Cubic inches | 86,400 in³ |
| US gallons | 374 gal |
| Liters | 1,416 L |
Quick conversions
| From | To |
|---|---|
| 1 cubic yard | 27 cubic feet |
| 1 cubic yard | 0.7646 cubic meters |
| 1 cubic yard | 202 US gallons |
| 1 cubic meter | 1.308 cubic yards |
Tips
- For irregular areas, calculate each section separately and add the cubic yards together.
- Remember that suppliers often round up to the next half or full yard, and charge a minimum for delivery.
- Loose materials settle and compact. Order a little extra for soil, mulch and gravel.
